Poor WiFi at Home? Why a Professional WiFi System Could Be the Answer

There are few things more frustrating than paying for a decent broadband connection, only to find that your WiFi struggles to reach certain rooms, drops out unexpectedly or becomes painfully slow when several devices are connected.

It's a common problem, particularly in larger homes, older properties and houses with thick stone walls.

At WaveTech South West, we help homeowners across Somerset, Wiltshire, Bath and surrounding areas improve their home WiFi with reliable, professionally installed networking solutions.

But does everyone need a professional WiFi system? Absolutely not.

Sometimes a basic router or mesh system is perfectly adequate. The important thing is understanding why your WiFi isn't performing as expected and choosing the right solution for your property.

Why Does WiFi Struggle in Some Homes?

One of the biggest misconceptions about WiFi is that having fast broadband automatically means having good WiFi throughout your home.

Unfortunately, that's not how it works.

Your broadband connection determines the speed available to your property, while your WiFi network distributes that connection wirelessly around your home.

You could have a 900Mbps fibre connection coming into your house, but that doesn't mean you'll receive anything close to that speed in every room.

Several factors can affect WiFi performance:

  • Thick walls and solid floors: Particularly common in older Somerset and Wiltshire properties, where stone walls can significantly weaken wireless signals.
  • Property size and layout: A single router may struggle to provide reliable coverage across a large or unusually shaped home.
  • Router location: Broadband routers are often installed wherever the incoming connection happens to be, rather than in the best position for wireless coverage.
  • Multiple connected devices: Smart TVs, phones, tablets, security cameras and smart home equipment all place demands on the network.
  • Wireless interference: Neighbouring networks and other electronic equipment can affect performance.

The result is often a perfectly good broadband connection paired with disappointing WiFi coverage.

Are WiFi Extenders and Mesh Systems Any Good?

Yes, and for many households they can be a sensible, cost-effective solution.

WiFi extenders are relatively inexpensive and can help improve coverage in certain situations. However, they have limitations, particularly when the connection between the extender and the main router is already weak.

Mesh WiFi systems are generally a more capable option. They use multiple wireless units to provide coverage across a larger area and can work very well in suitable properties.

However, mesh systems aren't a guaranteed solution.

In homes with thick stone walls, solid floors or considerable distances between rooms, the wireless connection between mesh units can become the weak point.

This is where a professionally designed WiFi network can make a significant difference.

What Is a Professional WiFi System?

Rather than relying on a single router to cover an entire property, a professional WiFi installation can use multiple wireless access points positioned around the home.

Where practical, these access points are connected using dedicated network cabling.

This means each access point has a reliable wired connection back to the network, rather than depending on a wireless signal travelling through several walls.

The benefits can include:

  • More consistent WiFi coverage throughout the property.
  • Improved reliability in difficult-to-reach rooms.
  • Better performance when multiple devices are connected.
  • Seamless movement between coverage areas with appropriately configured equipment.
  • The ability to extend the network into garden offices, workshops and outbuildings.

At WaveTech South West, we work with networking equipment from manufacturers including Ubiquiti UniFi and Ruijie, alongside other solutions where appropriate.

We don't believe in installing expensive equipment simply because it's available. The right system depends on the property, how the network is used and what the customer actually needs.

Wired Access Points vs Wireless Mesh – Which Is Better?

When it comes to reliability and consistent performance, wired access points are our preferred solution, every time cabling is practical.

With a wired installation, each access point has its own dedicated network connection. It doesn't need to communicate with another access point wirelessly to reach the main network.

Wireless mesh systems, on the other hand, rely on wireless connections between units. Those connections can be affected by distance, walls, interference and other factors.

Even an expensive wireless mesh system cannot eliminate the limitations of using WiFi itself to carry network traffic between access points.

A properly designed wired network provides a more reliable foundation, particularly in larger properties or homes with thick walls.

Of course, installing network cables isn't always possible or financially sensible. In those situations, a good-quality wireless mesh system can still provide an acceptable solution.

Our approach is simple: use wired connections wherever practical, and wireless alternatives where necessary.

Cloud Management and Remote Support – Added Value

Another advantage of the professional networking equipment we supply is the ability to manage and support the system remotely.

With our supported cloud-managed equipment, the cloud controller is included for the lifetime of the device, without an additional controller subscription charge.

We also include free remote support, giving customers access to assistance with their installed WiFi system without automatically needing an engineer to visit the property.

This can be particularly useful if a setting needs adjusting or a network issue needs investigating.

Remote management allows us to check supported equipment and make suitable configuration changes without always having to arrange a site visit.

It doesn't mean every problem can be fixed remotely. Physical faults, cabling issues or equipment failures may still require a visit.

However, having remote management available can make ongoing support much more convenient.

It's an important difference between simply buying a WiFi product and having a professionally installed and supported network.

What About WiFi in Garden Offices and Outbuildings?

Garden offices, workshops, garages and other outbuildings present their own challenges.

A WiFi signal that works reasonably well inside the main house may struggle to reach a separate building, especially when external walls and distance are involved.

Depending on the layout and requirements, possible solutions include outdoor-rated network cabling, fibre connections or dedicated wireless links between buildings.

Simply installing another WiFi extender isn't always the best answer.

A properly planned connection can provide reliable internet access for working from home, video calls, streaming and other everyday activities.

Do You Really Need Professional WiFi Installation?

Not necessarily.

If you live in a small property, have relatively few connected devices and already enjoy reliable WiFi coverage, there's probably little reason to spend money replacing your existing setup.

Even in larger homes, a suitable consumer mesh system may be all that's required.

However, professional installation becomes worth considering when:

  • You've already tried improving your WiFi without satisfactory results.
  • Certain rooms consistently have poor or unreliable coverage.
  • Your home has thick stone walls or multiple floors.
  • You need dependable connectivity for working from home.
  • You want WiFi coverage across a larger property or separate outbuildings.
  • You're renovating and want to install reliable network infrastructure for the future.

The aim shouldn't be to install the most expensive network. It should be to install a system that works reliably and represents good value for money.
